Although not quite at the equivalent scale as pardoning Thanksgiving turkeys, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own presidential-style act this week by formally pardoning the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava carried out the annual tradition at the Cuban-themed Latin Cafe 2000 in the heart of Miami’s Little Havana neighborhood.
“This animal is guiltless. Clemency is justified for her. No offenses are on her docket,” Levine Cava said in a speech with obvious nods to the vast quantity of pardons issued since the onset of a current administration.
“Unless you count eating six or seven apples per day,” she went on. “Let this swine have a long and happy life away from worry.”
The event, which both honors and questions the local cultural practice of feasting on pork during the holidays, was founded to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, contributed by a Coral Gables firefighter, was given its name from the popular vernacular phrase of young people yelling “six-seven” – originating from a musical verse – often for no discernable reason. The craze became so widespread that a prominent word reference recently made “6-7” its annual vocabulary selection.
Six Seven the pig is now scheduled to spend its days at a farm sanctuary “away from grills and cookware”, according to the event’s official press release.
“The annual pig pardon has become a beloved tradition to kick off the end-of-year celebrations,” said Eric Castellanos, in a decidedly positive message.
“It represents the essence of Miami: happy, diverse, and rooted in traditions that foster togetherness. Annually, we are proud to celebrate culture and compassion in a way distinctively Miamian.”
Guests enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked the swine's new lease on life.
