Three members of law enforcement were killed and no fewer than 15 others sustained injuries in an apparently deliberate detonation from gas at a country home in Italy's north.

Event Timeline

The blast occurred as officers and emergency crews went into the house close to the Verona region to carry out an eviction order for three siblings who were older adults.

The three officers killed belonged to the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and a third person who escaped after the explosion was found not long after. The trio have been admitted to the hospital.

The detonation could be audible as far as 3 miles distant and footage from the location revealed the building left as a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to evict the three family members in the previous occasions.

Property Situation

The head of the Veneto area, President Zaia, said the farmhouse was facing an court order due to unpaid amounts accrued by the property owners.

Negotiators had been dispatched to engage the siblings who had barricaded themselves into the home. When the officers came shortly after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), officials think one of the residents caused the blast.

“When we entered the property, we faced an utterly insane act,” local police chief Commander Papagno told the media.

A gas canister had been ignited, and the blast precisely impacted our officers,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also discovered at the property, the minister said.

Impact Assessment

Injured individuals by the explosion consisted of 11 other members of the military police as well as a trio of personnel of the state police and a emergency responder.

Based on information from the prosecuting attorney, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had no electricity.

The prosecutor thought the explosion had taken place on a level above the entrance and told journalists it was a “deliberate and pre-planned murder”. Just prior to the incident, he mentioned members had “noticed a hissing sound, likely the gas cylinders being turned on”.

Local Response

“All of us understood the scenario was critical,” nearby inhabitants informed local news, adding that the family members had in the past stated to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

Minister of Defence Minister Crosetto stood alongside other political leaders in commemorating the three men who had lost their lives in the performance of their duties.
