Child of Former South African Leader Zuma Refutes Terror Allegations as Trial Commences

The daughter of ex- South African Head of State Jacob Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror charges at the beginning of her court case in the port city of Durban.

Zuma-Sambudla, forty-three, is being prosecuted over comments she posted on social media several years back during violent demonstrations in South Africa that occurred subsequent to the detention of her father.

A week of disorder in multiple regions of the country in July 2021, including looting and fire-setting, left at least 300 killed and resulted in damage worth an estimated $2.8 billion (£2.2 billion).

Zuma-Sambudla has been alleged of fuelling this turmoil and faces accusations of incitement to commit terrorism and civil unrest.

Context of the Legal Matter

The protests were concentrated in the regions of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal province and followed the ex-leader's apprehension for defying a court order to give evidence at an investigation into accusations of corruption while he was serving as president.

The defendant has consistently refuted the accusations against her, with her attorney earlier labelling the prosecution's case as weak.

She has also consistently claimed the accusations against her were an bid to settle political grievances with her father after he established his own party and campaigned against the African National Congress.

Backing and Court Representation

This was supported by the Zuma foundation, which stated the legal matter was an "power abuse" and a "organized effort" of "political and kinship persecution" against the former president and his family.

A handful of backers from her group, her party, appeared outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other group representatives participated in the hearings inside.

The defense has maintained that the evidence presented by prosecutors is inadequate and lacks concrete grounds for a criminal finding.
