Figures from both sides of the partisan divide and the entertainment industry are coming together to censure former President Donald Trump for his remarks following the shocking deaths of acclaimed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
Following the discovery of the couple deceased at their Brentwood home, Trump posted on his platform to label the deceased director as "anguished and struggling". In a post, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the anger he caused others through his massive, unyielding, and incurable affliction with a debilitating disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
His comments then pivoted to praising his own achievements, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "intense obsession" and "clear paranoia" with what Trump called the "unprecedented era of America".
Authorities have since announced the detention of the couple's adult son, Nick, on suspicion of homicide in relation to the case. Reports indicate his bond was set at a significant amount.
The reaction to Trump's post was immediate and scathing.
“What a vile and vile statement,” said public figure Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who called Reiner a friend, also condemned the statements. Goldberg referenced previous rhetoric from Trump about political violence, demanding, "Do you have no shame? Can you get any lower?"
California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, succinctly wrote, "He is a sick man."
Mirroring this sentiment, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "He is a despicable piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy commented, "Trump has just lost it. Now saying Rob and Michele Reiner brought on their own murder because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Some GOP elected officials also expressed dismay.
Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene stated that the event was "a personal tragedy, not about political feuds or rivals". She also mentioned struggles with addiction and psychological well-being within families.
Another GOP representative, Thomas Massie, called Trump's remarks "inappropriate and disgraceful" considering the circumstances. He publicly dared others in his political party to justify the comments.
Rob Reiner was long a outspoken critic of Donald Trump. In a past interview, he argued Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also cautioned about the dangers of autocracy should Trump return to power.
"We see authoritarianism making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "Should the United States crumble, there’s a danger that democratic systems crumble around the world."
Despite his pointed opposition, Reiner had in the past expressed "complete revulsion" and denounced violence for political ends unequivocally after the killing of a different political figure.
Providing a layer of historical irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the photographer who shot the cover image for Donald Trump's iconic book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the photo shoot, noting Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" while posing on a high-rise with a view of Central Park.
