New York City's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, departing from the affordable apartment that became a focal point throughout his election bid.

A Traditional Abode

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the primary dwelling for the majority of New York City mayors after the post-war period.

However, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a core platform, hesitated to declare his residency plans promptly following his electoral win in November.

"This decision was based on keeping my family safe and the imperative to focusing all of my focus on implementing the agenda for affordability voters supported," Mamdani said in his announcement.

Leaving Astoria

He resided in the Queens borough of Astoria, a district famous for its diverse cultural enclaves and culinary diversity.

"To Astoria: many thanks for exemplifying the best of New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, it will forever remain a part of me and the work I do," he affirmed.

Political Debate

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.

But his critics, most notably former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for living in the affordable housing although he came from a well-known family.

Previous Exceptions

Not all mayors have chosen to live at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his private home on Manhattan's Upper East Side throughout his time in office, which wrapped up in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a venue for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Grand New Home

Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion sometime around his swearing-in on 1 January, he will be surrounded by surroundings very different than his humble Astoria home.

Featuring cream-colored walls, forest green window covers, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.

Internally, the first floor of the classically designed mansion is appointed consistent with the home's original era.

The compound, which is said to has five bedrooms, also has increased security measures to protect the mayor and his family.

Haunted History

Past occupants have suggested that Gracie Mansion also has supernatural lodgers.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, informed the press that doors would sometimes open and shutting on their own, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was more certain. "I don't care what people claim," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

The apartment he is leaving is rent stabilised, which means the city imposes caps on how much property owners can increase rent each year.

City residents see such units as essential protections as the housing expenses exceeds the means of many residents.

Records showed Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

According to the property website Zillow, the average rent for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
