Burns Dismissed on the Opening Delivery in Ashes series
The opening ball in a contest represents much more than just one ball.
It represents a gut-wrenching three to three moments filled with sheer excitement, where all of the pre-match talk finally concludes.
"To set that atmosphere throughout the whole contest would be truly remarkable," commented English paceman Gus Atkinson after questioned about the possibility recently.
"I understand we've witnessed numerous memorable first-ball instances during Ashes cricket history. The possibility to join to legacy would be amazing."
As Atkinson explains, that first ball has delivered some of the most historic cricket moments - ones that appeared to define the narrative and at least proved easy to look back on later on...
Skipper Ben Stokes declared on 393-8 just before stumps during the first day in the 2023 Ashes series
Zak Crawley had spent his lead-up for 2023's Ashes series thinking about hitting the first ball to four runs - regarding hoping to "deliver an impact."
Australian skipper Pat Cummins ran in at Edgbaston and the batsman cracked a drive through the covers to roaring roars by the England crowd.
"I've always remained an enormous admirer of the opening delivery in Ashes cricket," Crawley explained.
"I've been following it from youth so I knew a couple weeks out that should we won coin toss it meant an excellent chance of receiving that ball."
"I talked to Harry Brook about this when we were playing golf in Scotland - that it would be special if I could hit the first one away to make a statement."
England may not have claimed that series - and the Australians dramatically took that first Test during last day - yet it proved a preview of the way Stokes' side would play aggressively throughout the summer.
England were bowled out to 147 runs during the first day of the 2021-22 Ashes series
This moment at Edgbaston remains among rare first deliveries to go the way of England, though.
Significantly more typically they've served as ominous signs of the Australian dominance that would be following.
During 2021's series, Mitchell Starc bowled England batsman Rory Burns via a leg-stump half-volley in Brisbane becoming the initial bowler to take a wicket with the first ball in a series after Aussie bowler Ernest McCormick during the 1930s.
England's preparation was poor so at that point during Australian celebration England received a hit to their morale.
"My confidence just dropped to the floor," said paceman Stuart Broad, watching watching from the pavilion.
"We had worked for these matches and bang, first ball, he's dismissed."
The Ashes were gone within 11 more days and Australia won the contest 4-0.
Michael Slater made 176 during the first innings in the 1994-95 series, having cut the opening ball in the series to boundary
It's also unsurprising a captain who thrived in "mental disintegration" thought proceedings were determined by a similar incident 27 years earlier.
Steve Waugh and the Australians aimed for their fourth Ashes series win consecutively as opener Michael Slater began the 1994-95 series with emphatically crunching England seamer Phil DeFreitas to boundary through the offside.
"It was as if 'okay team we're off once more we have dominated now'," said Waugh, who would feature every Tests during three-one domestic victory.
"Psychologically it felt like we're on top now and we should keep hammering away. We know how to defeat this team."
Ominous.
Australia scored 602-9 declared during the first innings following Steve Harmison's wide, as captain Ricky Ponting making 196
But suppose that ball proves only that - a single among 10,000 or so to start the contest?
The errant delivery Steve Harmison bowled to begin 2006's series - when he sent the ball into the hands of captain Andrew Flintoff at the slips, nearly avoiding the pitch completely - became the most iconic Ashes first ball ever.
"I panicked," Harmison told journalists soon afterwards.
"I allowed the pressure of the moment overwhelm me. It all seemed so strange to me. My whole being felt tense."
"I couldn't stop my hands from being sweaty. That initial delivery slipped from my hands, the next did as well, and, following that, I had no control, nothing."
The English claimed 2005's Ashes 15 months earlier yet were comprehensively defeated 5-0. Many argue that series ended at that exact instant.
"We weren't skilled enough to defeat
