The Hamilton Island Resort, a Popular Queensland Getaway on the Great Barrier Reef, Reportedly Set to be Acquired by US Investment Giant.

An iconic tropical holiday destination situated on the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef has entered into an agreement for sale to a American investment group for a sum said to be worth 1.2 billion Australian dollars.

Details of the Sale

The New York-headquartered, Blackstone – which also owns the casino-hotel chain Crown Resorts – announced it had entered into an agreement to acquire the island resort from the Oatley family, subject to standard regulatory approvals.

The sellers released a statement noting they were pleased with the new owners of an island that holds a “special place in the hearts of countless Australians” and is referred to as “Australia’s Tropical Island”.

Hamilton Island's Scale and Features

Located almost 900km north of Brisbane and approximately 500 kilometers south of Cairns, the island spans over 1,130 hectares across two islands.

Approximately 30% of the land is developed, featuring a significant array of amenities:

• Five hotels
• Over twenty dining and drinking venues
• Twenty shops and retail spaces
• An championship 18-hole golf course on neighboring Dent Island
• A boat marina and a commercial airport

The resort is noted as a significant employer in the Whitsunday region, supporting a large on-island community and staff, as well as a wide network of regional partners, suppliers, and area businesses.

A Look Back at The Island's History

The deceased Robert Oatley, a well-known yachtsman and vintner, originally purchased the resort for A$200 million in the year 2003 after spying the island from the deck a yacht during a voyage through the Whitsunday passage.

Hamilton's major development phase initially started in the 1980s. In the decades before that, it was home to simple iron huts and more humble quarters that housed domestic holidaymakers from the outback and from the south.

The acquiring firm has ownership of luxury hotels and resorts in multiple countries, such as Japan, India, the Maldives, Sri Lanka, and the United States.

The Whitsunday region is the traditional lands and seas of the Ngaro people. Its name derives from Captain James Cook, who sailed the Endeavour through the archipelago on June 3, 1770, which was Whit Sunday.
