The Lions of Teranga's Emerging Star Lamine Camara: Starting from Aspirations to Tournament Favorites.

As I walk into the room, the young midfielder grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after the conversation. This serves as a simple symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; I was focused solely on that,” remarks this Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and natural ability won over clubs like Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the most difficult approval to secure was not a sporting director or coach, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

In time, on “one beautiful day,” Camara earned his father’s blessing to chase his path in the sport. A further barrier was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from giving him a contract.

Nevertheless, the famed academy – the institution that produced talents including Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. Following Camara was named the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “They took me directly to the academy. They prevented me from going back home,” Camara said.

An Unforgettable Season and European Breakthrough

That decision put him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “an unforgettable year,” which began with Camara winning the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, guiding his nation to victory and earning player of the tournament.

A month later, he signed for FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Settling in wasn't a challenge,” says the youngster. He has lived by himself in Europe, a choice his relatives support to maintain his concentration.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from the Belgian maestro's “modesty” and exceptional skills. He is also a big admirer of midfielders such as Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, after being shown red at the start of his spells at each French club. “It is a habit I carry with me!” he quips.

Life at Monaco, Mentors and Future Ambitions

At Monaco, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “As soon as I heard about the interest in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” he said.

Currently, his focus is firmly on the Afcon tournament with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a historic 3-1 win in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the English top flight, he is committed to Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often teased by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, but is serious about targeting the senior top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. If you beat England at Wembley… it gives you confidence.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, steely determination, and grand ambitions targeting to guide Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
