Twelve months back, the environment was entirely separate. Ahead of the national election, reflective residents could recognize the country's deep flaws – its inequities and inequality – yet they could still perceive it as America. A free society. A place where constitutional order meant something. A nation headed by a honorable and decent leader, even with his advanced age and growing weakness.
Nowadays, in late October 2025, numerous citizens hardly identify the land we reside in. Individuals believed to be undocumented migrants are rounded up and forced into transport, sometimes refused legal rights. The left side of the presidential residence – is being destroyed to build a lavish dance hall. Donald Trump is harassing his political rivals or supposed enemies and insisting the justice department surrender a massive sum of taxpayer money. Armed military personnel are deployed to US urban areas with deceptive justifications. The Pentagon, relabeled the War Department, has effectively liberated itself of day-to-day journalistic scrutiny during its expenditure of what could amount to close to a trillion USD in public funds. Colleges, law firms, journalism organizations are buckling under the president’s threats, and billionaires are handled as members of the royal family.
“The United States, shortly prior to its 250th birthday as the globe's top democratic nation, has crossed the limit into autocracy and extremism,” Garrett Graff, stated in August. “In the end, swifter than I imagined possible, it occurred in this country.”
One awakes amid recent atrocities. And it's challenging to understand – and painful to realize – just how far gone our nation is, and the rapid pace with which it has happened.
Yet, we understand that the leader was legitimately chosen. Even after his deeply disturbing previous administration and despite the cautions that came with the knowledge of the rightwing blueprint – despite the leader directly stated openly he would act as an autocrat only on the first day – enough Americans selected him rather than Kamala Harris.
Frightening as the present situation is, it's more frightening to recognize that we are just several months into this administration. What will three more years of this downfall find us? And what if that timeframe turns into a more extended duration, because there is not anyone to restrain this ruler from deciding that another term is required, perhaps for national security reasons?
Admittedly, there is still hope. There are midterm elections in 2026 that could create a new political equilibrium, in case Democrats recapture the Senate or House of the legislature. There exist public servants who are attempting to exert a degree of oversight, for example Democratic congressmen currently starting a probe regarding the effort to cash appropriation from legal authorities.
And a presidential election three years from now could initiate the path to healing precisely as the prior selection set us on this unfortunate course.
There exist numerous residents marching in the streets across municipalities, like they performed last weekend in the No Kings rallies.
A former official, stated lately that “the dormant powerhouse of the nation is awakening”, similar to past following the Red Scare in that decade or throughout the Vietnam war protests or during the Watergate scandal.
During those times, the unstable nation finally returned to balance.
Reich says he understands the signals of that awakening and notices it unfolding now. As evidence, he references the large-scale demonstrations, the broad, bipartisan pushback to a television host's removal and the largely united defiance by media to accept government requirements they solely cover what is sanctioned.
“The sleeping giant consistently stays inactive until some venality turns extremely harmful, some action so contemptuous of the common good, specific cruelty so noisy, that he is compelled except to rise.”
It's a hopeful perspective, and I value the author's seasoned opinion. Possibly he may be validated.
Meanwhile, the big questions endure: is the US able to ever recover? Is it possible to restore its position globally and its devotion to constitutional order?
Or should we recognize that the 250-year-old experiment succeeded temporarily, and then – swiftly, totally – ended?
My cynical mind suggests that the second option is true; that everything might be gone. My hopeful heart, nevertheless, convinces me that we must try, through all methods available.
For me, as a media critic, that’s about encouraging reporters to commit, more fully, to their purpose of scrutinizing authority. For some people, it could mean engaging with congressional campaigns, or organizing rallies, or developing approaches to protect electoral access.
Not even one year prior, we lived in an alternate reality. A year from now? Or after another term? The fact is, we cannot predict. All we can do is try to continue fighting.
The engagement I encounter with students with aspiring reporters, who are both idealistic and realistic, {always
