In a major move for their retooling roster, the Chicago White Sox have welcomed Japanese star Munetaka Murakami, agreeing to a lucrative contract for the accomplished player.
The agreement includes a substantial signing bonus, issued within 30 days, combined with compensation of $16 million for the 2026 season and $17 million for the 2027 year.
Importantly, Murakami's compensation is subject to escalators based on accolade achievements in 2026:
His deal includes that he cannot be sent to the minors without his permission and makes him a free agent at the termination of the term. Further benefits include a club-supplied interpreter and airfare between his home country and the States.
As part of the acquisition, Chicago owes a transfer fee of $6,575,000 to the Swallows, Murakami's former team in Japan's professional league. The Yakult organization are also entitled to a 15% cut of fifteen percent triggered incentive payments.
Murakami will become the fourth-ever Japanese to suit up for the White Sox, in the footsteps of reliever Shingo Takatsu (2004-05), second baseman Tadahito Iguchi (2005-07), and outfielder Kosuke Fukudome (2012). Notably, Takatsu previously coached Murakami while both were in Japan.
Murakami, a left-side batter who turns 26 in February, enters a emerging lineup in Chicago that includes prospects like Colson Montgomery, Kyle Teel, and Chase Meidroth. The club are coming off a 60-102 season, finishing at the bottom in the AL Central but representing a 19-game improvement from the previous campaign.
Having earned Central League MVP honors in '21 and '22, Murakami is renowned for a monumental 2022 season where he hit 56 home runs, eclipsing the single-season record for a player in Japan previously held by icon Sadaharu Oh. That performance also made him the youngest player ever to achieve Japan's elusive batting Triple Crown.
His last year was limited to 56 games due to an muscle issue. Despite striking out 64 Ks, he hit .273 with 22 HRs and 47 runs batted in.
Over his career tenure with the Yakult club, Murakami has compiled a .270 lifetime batting average with 246 home runs, 647 runs batted in, and 977 Ks in 892 games. Early in his career playing primarily at first base, he has spent most of his time to third base.
Murakami's big-game performance were on full display during the 2023 WBC. In the semi-final against Mexico, he delivered a victory-sealing two-base hit that drove in two fellow Japanese stars for a thrilling 6-5 victory. The very next day in the final against the Team USA, he hit a equalizing homer in the early innings, setting the stage for Japan's subsequent title triumph.
The lefty slugger is scheduled to be officially presented at a media availability on the coming Monday.
