Why Real Madrid Have 'Utter Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch

The young midfielder playing
Thiago Pitarch has played seven games for the Spanish giants, including five starts.

When an teenage creates club history in a crucial European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts praise and attention.

In only his first start in the tournament - and fifth appearance for the team - Thiago Pitarch suitably impressed as the fifteen-time Champions League winners claimed a three-nil last-16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The teenager, who also made his club debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in the midweek second leg to secure a last eight place.

At 18 years old, Pitarch became the team's youngest player to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, beating star Vinicius Jr's previous mark by a week and a half.

A Meteoric Rise From The Academy

This talent is the latest to come through from the famed youth system and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.

He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico Madrid and Getafe's youth teams, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he rapidly created a positive impact.

Pitarch progressed to the B team and it was in a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the youngster is said to have caught the attention of the current Real boss, who replaced Xabi Alonso in January.

Spanish media would later describe the moment as "an instant connection," adding Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and determination he added to the side.

'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'

During the summer of 2025, ex-manager Alonso called up Pitarch to train with the first team and awarded him minutes in the warm-up matches.

Yet, it was the change in manager that proved the turning point in his development as he came on as a late substitute in both ties against the Portuguese side that set up the clash with Pep Guardiola's team.

"I've dreamed of this every night before going to bed, the first day I started playing football, each day you head to training and each day you have a game," stated Pitarch after his first appearance.

"I've just achieved my dream with the greatest club in the planet and in the top tournament."

Handed a first start in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for several seasons after moving from Atletico in 2018 - he has retained his place for the following four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opening.

Pitarch has taken it with performances that have belied his age and inexperience.

"He is a extremely fast footballer, and you can observe what he's capable of," said the coach. "He's incredibly dynamic, with excellent stamina, work-rate and mobility."

The player's mindset has also impressed his coach.

"His standout trait is his character," added he. "He constantly demands the ball, and when pressed, he doesn't feel it.

"I understand fans might be surprised to watch him make his debut in a Champions League match, but he's playing because I had total confidence in him to perform his normal game.

"Thiago will continue to get chances with the main squad. It's a pleasure to have a talent like him."

Spain or Morocco?

Pitarch was born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in the local game, progressing through local academies before entering Real Madrid's renowned youth academy.

He holds both Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, offering him the choice to play for either country at the highest level.

According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may represent multiple nations at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only binding once they play in a official senior international match.

He has featured for the Spanish national team at youth level, turning out for both the under-19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain reached the quarter-finals.

Nevertheless, he has not yet decided to either senior national team, who are watching his rise with keen attention.

Speaking recently, the player confirmed: "I have not taken my final decision yet. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."

This scenario mirrors that of other bi-national players such as Real team-mate Brahim Diaz and Barca star Yamal. While teenage Yamal chose Spain, Brahim decided to represent Morocco.

Focus on the Future

At present, his attention is on establishing himself in the Madrid lineup and rewarding Arbeloa's faith.

He featured for over an hour in the two-one win at the Etihad, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a quarter-final tie with Bayern Munich.

He was replaced by fellow youth graduate in Manuel Angel to emphasise the coach's confidence in younger players to help the club chase trophies to come.

After his impressive impact to date on European football's biggest stage, the midfielder is tipped to play a key role in that.

"The manager handles me the same. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I must earn my minutes on the pitch," he commented after the success at Etihad Stadium.
